Cataloging Projects

 

Below are projects staff have identified as problems with the catalog; they are in no particular order.

 

Cataloging staff are committed to work on resolving these as time permits unless someone requests their resolution to become a priority.

Project #1    Volumes identification within Items

 

Project Description:

 

MARC field 300 contains an open volume entry (e.g.: v.), but item records don't denote any volume information (e.g: v.7 or 2005).

 

    Status:  Open

 

 

 

 

Project #2    Missing Series Entries

 

Project Description:

 

Lots of older bib records are missing series information.  This project would identify titles that are part of series and (if missing) enter such information.  This information would be particularly useful for TV shows and fiction series).  We should also review the inclusion of popular names of series in addition to the formal series name.

 

    Status:  Open

 

 

 

 

Project #3    Clean up monographic bibs with volume information in items

 

Project Description:

 

Some libraries have added items and included volume fields when such information is inappropriate.  This project would identify item records with volume fields attached to monographic bib records and attempt to determine what the library's intention was when they used the volume field.  Fixing these records will assist patrons who attempt to place holds on these titles.  The volume field in an item record will force patrons placing holds to select a specific item upon which to place the hold.  It is much preferable to have patrons place bib holds rather than item holds.

Project #4    URL pointers in .pdf files

 

Project Description:

 

How to determine workflow for URL checkers.  Determine what URLs are important to keep... which ones are valued to go out and search.

Project #5    Learning Express ebooks

 

Project Description:

 

Catalog ebooks (per Evan's request).

 

       Status:  Open

 

 

 

 

Project #6    Catalog Gale ebooks

 

Project Description:

 

Catalog ebooks that are part of our Gale subscription  (per Evan's request).

 

    Status:  Open

 

 

 

Project #7    Add enhanced content to current scores & CDs

 

Project Descriptiion:

 

Add all the subfield t entries to the 505 field (content notes) of music scores and music CDs.  This will enable the catalog to index song titles.

 

    Status:  Open

 

 

 

 

Project #8    Catalog websites, local databases and digital collections

 

Project Description:

 

Work with library staff (APL & System staff) to determine criteria for what resources will be cataloged.  Cataloged resources will become additions to InfoSoup.

 

    Status:  Ongoing

 

       Notes:  Cataloging staff have added records for web resources upon request.  Typical requests have been for Wisconsin and Federal documents and websites, but staff have also requested some genealogical online resources and oneline automotive manuals resources.

 

 

 

 

 

Project #9    Establish Local Series Authority File

 

Project Description:

 

Create local series authority records in InfoSoup catalog since Library of Congress is no longer providing this service. 

 

    Status:  Ongoing

 

 

 

 

Project #10   Create load table to load Ebsco titles database

 

Project Description:

 

Create a load table to map Ebsco order record information into the serials module.  This may also be accomplished using EDI.  More information and working with Ebsco staff will be required.

 

    Status:  Ongoing

 

 

Project #11   Fix typographical errors in bib records

 

Project Description:

 

Consult the Library Typos Index to identify common typographical errors in OPACs.  Check for each typographical error in MilCat (i.e. keyword search) and correct any typographical errors currently in the local database (Milcat).

**There is a printed list on the bulletin board in front of Katie's desk with the list progress marked.

 

    Status:  Ongoing (11/05/09 "0-Assemby" is complete; begin with Assocat* (Association, Associate, etc.)

 

 

Project #12   Add Spanish subject headings (.bidex) to Spanish language materials

 

Project Description:

 

Identify Spanish language materials without Spanish subject headings (.bidex) currently in the local database (MilCat).  Check WorldCat (search by OCLC number) for updated records displaying Spanish subject headings (.bidex) that were not updated in MilCat.  Update records in MilCat to reflect Spanish subject headings (.bidex) and consult LCSH-ES.org to view appropriate Spanish subject headings (.bidex) for those OCLC/MilCat records without appropriate subject headings.

 

    Status:  Ongoing [**a master list of bib records in MilCat (displayed with OCLC numbers to match bib records) without any Spanish subject headings (.bidex) is currently being created and will be posted here as soon as the list is completed]

 

 

Project #13   Update authority records/subject headings in MilCat to reflect updated Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH)

 

Project Description:

 

Consult the LCSH weekly lists website to identify cancelled/updated LCSH and update corresponding authority records/subject headings in MilCat.

 

    Status:  Ongoing
